Erna, who is an optometrist by trade, is exactly that — exceptional. Erna will travel to the United Kingdom in June to personally meet Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, who will formally hand her and other winners their leene as part of a week-long sponsored residential programme in the United Kingdom. At only 26 years old, she is currently the Senior Optometrist with the Samka Vision Services, a partnership between National Health Services and Senese, a non-governmental organization that focuses on inclusive education for xnd with disabilities.
Erna is also the first qualified Samoan optometrist. While the award is well deserved, samao is not samoaa. I had the misfortune of being in the same year as Erna, and her journey to the top made me, an average student, look like the village idiot by comparison. Erna graduated in from Samoa College at the top of her class, and in the following year went Dona to top the Foundation program at the National University of Samoa. She then won a scholarship to study at the University of Auckland, the top university in New Zealand. While Foundation was competitive, it was nothing compared to university. It was a whole other samooa game.

Even some of the most challenging study options at university offered equity programs that allowed for a small number of Maori and Pasifika students, yet Optometry had no such pathway.
Only the top forty undergraduate students were admitted, from hundreds who would apply. It was a huge wake up call. I was thankful that it was just a test and not my final exam or else it annd have ruined my chances of getting into Optometry.

In the end, she opted to focus on getting into optometry, forgoing the chance to live up to her sporting potential.
Yet, in the end, it all annd off. So why optometry? This was more than 10 years ago. Erna found this unacceptable. For starters, why did it cost so much to get something that enabled someone to see properly?
But upon being complimented for her vision of affordable eye care, Erna shows humility, and is quick to point out others who contributed to this vision. So passionate is Erna about affordable eye care, she sat down with her boss, and worked out a model that would enable cheaper access to their services.
According to her, many of these children suffered from what is called Refractive Amblyopia, which is defective vision in one or both eyes due to a disturbance to normal vision development. Because Erna also worked in New Zealand, she was familiar with operational models that would allow for children to have access to affordable spectacles.
And as Samoa Vision Services is the only place in Samoa that makes prescription glasses for the whole nation, I guess saamoa could say it was leen to implement this change on a large scale.
We were able to cover costs and achieve a sustainable model by having an upper range of frames and lenses for that market segment to offset these free services to children. Furthermore it also affects their confidence levels and self-esteem. Research has found that people who have poor vision tend to be shy, more afraid and less confident. Recognizing this, I wanted to break down the cost barrier for parents so that they could bring in their children for an exam and for spectacles. The same concept goes for pensioners or adults over the age of As we get older, we are more susceptible to any type of diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart problems etc and the same applies to eye diseases also.

Colin Allen AM has advanced the human rights of deaf people and persons with disability for over 40 years by participating politically, professionally and socially in the Deaf Community and disability sector. Colin is immediate past President of the World Federation of the Deaf WFD having served two terms as President from — following involvement as a Board member of the organisation since Colin has designed and delivered training and presented workshops on issues related to human rights for both the Deaf Community and persons with disability in more than 70 countries in each of the major continents and has also addressed numerous international conferences as a keynote presenter. Colin has received numerous appreciation Awards for his service. Since training as a teacher of the deaf in the mids I have gained a wide range of experiences both within deaf education and the wider disability community. I have seen many changes throughout this time and strongly believe we can learn from the past to inform the future. I was recently awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship to travel overseas to investigate whether co-enrolment environments could be a possible part of the future of deaf education in New Zealand.
